MP4 to TIFF Conversion FAQ
How do I extract images from a MP4 video as TIFF?
+
Upload your MP4 video. PDF.to pulls frames out at the rate you pick and gives you a ZIP of TIFF stills.
How many frames will I get from the MP4?
+
By default, one frame per second of MP4 runtime. The options panel lets you pick every frame, one per 5 seconds, only key-frames, or a custom interval.
What resolution will the extracted TIFF images have?
+
Source resolution. A 1080p MP4 produces 1920×1080 TIFF stills; a 4K source produces 3840×2160 stills. Downscale in the options panel if needed.
Can I extract a single frame at a specific timestamp?
+
Yes. Use the timestamp picker on the upload preview to scrub to the exact moment, then click 'extract this frame as TIFF'.
Is the frame extraction lossy?
+
Each frame is decoded from the MP4 (lossless) and re-encoded as TIFF. If TIFF is lossless (PNG), no quality is lost. If TIFF is JPG, we use high quality (90) by default.
Will the TIFF stills be timestamped or numbered?
+
Yes — file names are zero-padded sequence numbers (TIFF_00001.TIFF, TIFF_00002.TIFF, ...) so they sort correctly. The options panel can also embed the source timecode in EXIF.
Can I make a contact-sheet or thumbnail grid from the MP4?
+
Yes — pick the 'contact sheet' option to get a single TIFF containing a grid of thumbnails, useful for storyboarding or video previews.
How large can my MP4 video be?
+
100 MB on the free plan, 5 GB on PRO. Frame extraction is fast even for long videos.
Is the MP4 to TIFF extraction free?
+
Yes for files under 100 MB. PRO unlocks larger files, higher extraction rates, and parallel processing.
Does PDF.to keep my MP4 or extracted TIFF files?
+
No. Both the source MP4 and the TIFF output ZIP are deleted within an hour. Conversion runs in an isolated worker.
Can I extract images only from a section of the MP4?
+
Yes. Use the trim controls to set start and end times, and only the selected range produces TIFF frames.
What if my MP4 has variable frame rate?
+
We normalize to a constant frame rate internally before extraction, so the TIFF stills are spaced evenly in time regardless of how the source was encoded.
