GIF to WebM Conversion FAQ
How do I convert a GIF into a WebM video?
+
PDF.to reads each frame of your GIF and re-encodes the sequence as a WebM video with a real video codec. Animated GIF files become smooth WebM clips; a single still GIF becomes a short fixed-length WebM.
Why convert a GIF to WebM instead of leaving it as is?
+
A WebM video is far smaller than an animated GIF of the same length and plays inline on phones without auto-looping quirks. Converting GIF to WebM is the standard fix for heavy animations that lag in a feed.
Does the WebM loop like the original GIF?
+
The WebM contains the same frames once through. Looping is a player setting rather than part of the video, so add a loop attribute when you embed the WebM if you want the endless-loop behavior a GIF has by default.
How small will the WebM be compared with the GIF?
+
Typically a fraction of the size. Video codecs compress motion between frames far better than a GIF can, so a multi-megabyte GIF routinely converts to a WebM a tenth of the size with no visible loss.
Can I batch-convert many GIF files to WebM?
+
Several files in one job need a paid plan. Free use is one file per conversion, one conversion an hour. On a paid plan you can add several files to one job, then download each result on its own or all of them in one ZIP.
Is the GIF to WebM conversion free?
+
Yes. One conversion an hour is free, with no account needed, for a file within the free size limit. A paid plan removes the hourly limit and the size limit, and lets you add several files to one job.
Will the WebM play on social media and messaging apps?
+
Yes. PDF.to outputs the WebM with a widely supported codec and a compatible pixel format, so it plays inline where an animated GIF would otherwise be re-encoded or rejected.
Does PDF.to keep my GIF after conversion?
+
Only for a short time. Your uploaded GIF and the resulting WebM are deleted from our servers automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. Nobody reads the contents, and nothing is shared.
