📙 On the Nature of Grammatical Relations (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) by Alec P. Marantz — pdf free

This book presents a theory of grammatical relations among sentential constituents which is a development of Chomsky's Government-Binding Theory. The cross-linguistic predictive power of the theory is unusually strong and it is supported in the examination of a wide range of languages. Within the syntax of a language, grammatical relations determine such things as word order, case marking, verb agreement, and the possibilities of anaphora (co- and disjoint reference) among nominals. Other approaches to grammatical relations have considered them to name classes of constituents that share clusters of properties, including most prominently structural positions or case marking, Still others have claimed that grammatical relations are primitives in syntactic theory, but are related essentially to semantic roles. Rejecting these approaches, this monograph develops a theory which includes at its core a "projection principle": The syntax of a language is assumed to be a (direct) "Projection" of the compositional sematics, and the mechanisms of projection are explicitly spelled out. Chapters cover the two asymmetries and two lexical features on which the theory is built; semantic and syntactic data from a wide variety of languages that support the universal applicability and explanatory power of these asymmetries and features; features of passive, antipassive, dative-shift, anticausative, causative, and applied verb constructions in the worlds' languages explained by the theory; confirmations of the theory's predictions in languages for which alternative approaches to grammatical relations fail to provide successful analyses; and, comparison of the book's conception of grammatical relations to those in the GB framework, Montague Grammar, Relational Grammar, and Lexical-Functional Grammar. On The Nature of Grammatical Relations is a Linguistic Inquiry Monograph.

The Syntax of Words (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
The Syntax of Words (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) free download by Elisabeth O. Selkirk

This monograph examines complex words -- compounds and those involving derivational and inflectional affixation -- from a syntactic standpoint that encompasses both the structure of words and the system of rules for generating that structure. The autho...

Indices and Identity (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Indices and Identity (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) epub download by Robert Fiengo & Robert C. May

Under what conditions are expressions of a language the same; when are they different? Indices and Identity focuses on this question in the context of the theory of anaphora and on the role of indices in characterizing syntactic and semantic identity o...

On the Definition of Word (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs 14)
On the Definition of Word (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs 14) free download by Anna Maria Di Sciullo, Edwin Williams

On The Definition of Word develops a consistent and coherent approach to central questions about morphology and its relation to syntax. In sorting out the various senses in which the word word is used, it asserts that three concepts which have often been ...

Why Agree? Why Move?: Unifying Agreement-Based and Discourse Configurational Languages (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Why Agree? Why Move?: Unifying Agreement-Based and Discourse Configurational Languages (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) download pdf by Shigeru Miyagawa

An unusual property of human language is the existence of movement operations. Modern syntactic theory from its inception has dealt with the puzzle of why movement should occur. In this monograph, Shigeru Miyagawa combines this question with another, that...

Dynamic Antisymmetry (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Dynamic Antisymmetry (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) free epub by Andrea Moro

The central idea of Dynamic Antisymmetry is that movement and phrase structure are not independent properties of grammar; more specifically, that movement is triggered by the geometry of phrase structure. Assuming a minim...

Distributed Reduplication (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Distributed Reduplication (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) pdf free by John Frampton

A convincing account of reduplicative phenomena has been a longstanding problem for rule-based theories of morphophonology. Many scholars believe that derivational phonology is incapable in principle of analyzing reduplication. In Distributed Reduplicatio...
