📙 Logical Form: Its Structure and Derivation (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) by Robert May — epub download

This study focuses on the relation of syntactic and semantic structure. It investigates the notion that within generative grammar there is a level of linguistic representation Logical Form. Its main assumption is that this is a level of phrase structure representation, derived by transformational operations from S-structure, and over which formal semantic interpretations are defined. The book explores Logical Form by focusing primarily on quantificational phenomena and on how their explicit syntactic representation interacts with various syntactic and semantic properties. Among the topics discussed are the interactions of wh and quantified phrases, bound variable anaphora, branching quantifiers, extraposition and multiple interrogation.Logical Form contains several technical innovations: the notion that LF-movement closely approximates "Move ?," a new approach to characterizing quantifier scope, which makes central use of the notion of "government," a novel interpretation of the relation of syntactic nodes and categorical projections, and an application of path theory to the syntactic structure of Logical Form.Robert May is Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Barnard College, Columbia University. Logical Form is Linguistic Inquiry Monograph 12.

Distributed Reduplication (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Distributed Reduplication (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) pdf free by John Frampton

A convincing account of reduplicative phenomena has been a longstanding problem for rule-based theories of morphophonology. Many scholars believe that derivational phonology is incapable in principle of analyzing reduplication. In Distributed Reduplicatio...

The Syntax of Words (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
The Syntax of Words (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) free download by Elisabeth O. Selkirk

This monograph examines complex words -- compounds and those involving derivational and inflectional affixation -- from a syntactic standpoint that encompasses both the structure of words and the system of rules for generating that structure. The autho...

Indices and Identity (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Indices and Identity (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) epub download by Robert Fiengo & Robert C. May

Under what conditions are expressions of a language the same; when are they different? Indices and Identity focuses on this question in the context of the theory of anaphora and on the role of indices in characterizing syntactic and semantic identity o...

Why Agree? Why Move?: Unifying Agreement-Based and Discourse Configurational Languages (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Why Agree? Why Move?: Unifying Agreement-Based and Discourse Configurational Languages (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) download pdf by Shigeru Miyagawa

An unusual property of human language is the existence of movement operations. Modern syntactic theory from its inception has dealt with the puzzle of why movement should occur. In this monograph, Shigeru Miyagawa combines this question with another, that...

On the Nature of Grammatical Relations (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
On the Nature of Grammatical Relations (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) pdf free by Alec P. Marantz

This book presents a theory of grammatical relations among sentential constituents which is a development of Chomsky's Government-Binding Theory. The cross-linguistic predictive power of the theory is unusually strong and it is supported in the examinatio...

Economy and Semantic Interpretation (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Economy and Semantic Interpretation (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) free pdf by Danny Fox

In Economy and Semantic Interpretation, Danny Fox investigates the relevance of principles of optimization (economy) to the interface between syntax and semantics. Supporting the view that grammar is restricted by economy...

The Antisymmetry of Syntax (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
The Antisymmetry of Syntax (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) download pdf by Richard S. Kayne

It is standardly assumed that Universal Grammar (UG) allows a given hierarchical representation to be associated with more than one linear order. For example, English and Japanese phrases consisting of a verb and its comp...

Dynamic Antisymmetry (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs)
Dynamic Antisymmetry (Linguistic Inquiry Monographs) free epub by Andrea Moro

The central idea of Dynamic Antisymmetry is that movement and phrase structure are not independent properties of grammar; more specifically, that movement is triggered by the geometry of phrase structure. Assuming a minim...
